Ethics Reference
CUREC: 735575
What does this involve?
After expressing interest in the study, you will need to complete a brief questionnaire online. If initial eligibility criteria are met, you will be invited to visit the Department of Psychiatry at Warneford Hospital. During this session, a researcher will review a participant information sheet, explain the procedures, and request your consent to participate. You will also be asked a few questions to confirm your eligibility to participate in the study. If found eligible to participate, you will be randomly assigned to an eight-week probiotic or placebo regimen. You will then be invited to attend one additional study visit, lasting approximately two hours in total. The probiotic being investigated is a dietary supplement known to support gut health and is generally well tolerated.
Who are we looking for?
Perimenopausal women aged 45 to 60 who are not currently receiving or seeking treatment for any mental health conditions are eligible. Unfortunately, we cannot include individuals who are on hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or other hormone-modulating medications, as these can affect mood and cognitive function (e.g., GLP-1 agonists). Additionally, you must be sufficiently fluent in English to understand tasks and provide informed consent.
